Band of boys
Chat F16 has a
way to win hearts through their music
“We are
from Chennai and do not speak a word of Hindi. And we certainly don’t have
anything to do with Indian classical music,” says Joshua, the manager and the
vocalist of the Chennai band F16.
And they can’t possibly do any Indian classical music with instruments
like guitar, bass guitar and drums. The five-piece band comprises of Joshua
(vocals and guitar), Vikram (drums), Harshan (keyboard), Viraj (lead guitar),
Sashank (bass) and they are quite an excited bunch for their first gig in
Hyderabad for the second edition of Rowson’s Reserve Smooth Spaces Off the
record event.
F16 quite doesn’t know how they zeroed in on the name but
definitely feels they connect with the strength and spirit of the F16 fighter
planes. Like all bands of youngsters, F16 also happens to be a bunch of friends
who played separately for other bands and would only jam once in a while.
“But after a point we realised we were so comfortable playing in
each other’s company that we couldn’t think of playing for others,” says
Joshua.
F16 however, mostly looks at playing their own numbers and do
not really rely on playing covers. “When do we display our music when we only
play covers,” Joshua points out.
F16 may be a sought-after band for shows now but when they first
went on stage, it was a disaster, they recall. “We were advised not to play or
perform again. But we turned the criticism into our driving force and got our
act together, including disciplining ourselves. And now we go on stage with a
lot of confidence and that’s why we are absolutely looking forward to the
response here,” says Joshua.
Plans of cutting an album are “in the pipeline as well,” they
confide.
